Turn Your Ear

‘turn your ear’ chant/hymn/psalm

A chant based on Psalm 31 – this was written from the NIV version. I kinda like the phrase ‘turn your ear’, but you could easily replace it with a more contemporary ‘listen up!’. We chanted this along to ‘Barbers Adagio for Strings’ by William Orbit - ATB remix, but anything with strong beat would do.

It doesn’t necessarily fit like verses to a song and has an uneven meter in places, instead just lock into the beat and let the words flow.

Turn your ear, come quick, come be my rock,
my refuge, my fortress, my guide.
Hear me when I’m weak, when I’m lost,
when I long to be strong, and we’ll walk
from this place with God at our side.

Free me from the trap that is set right up ahead,
Lord into your hands I commit my spirit.
I don’t want worthless idols, I don’t need the newest toy,
Don’t want to be caught in the trap of money and success
I confess, instead I rejoice, I rejoice in your love and your truth
cos I know that you look deep into my soul.

Turn your ear…

There are times well I feel lost in life’s lottery,
and I’m weak with confusion, I feel sick with grief.
I’m forgotten, discarded, like broken pottery.
I wonder how I’ll make it through the week without help
when all I seem to see is terror all around me
it’s all I can do to call out your name.
But I trust in you and I cry “My God….

turn your ear…

And you show me love in a city that’s besieged
by fear and hatred, that’s poor in hope.
And though I loose sight of you, and though I often doubt,
I know that you’re always listening and waiting
and wanting and maybe I can cope and be strong
for I long for your face to shine down on this town and on me.

Turn your ear…
